Live Moss for Bonsai

A moss-covered soil surface is one of the fastest ways to make a bonsai look established — it holds moisture at the root line, softens the transition from trunk to soil, and gives the whole planting a settled, woodland feel.

Our cushion moss (also called bun moss) is the classic choice: it holds its rounded shape, presses flat without falling apart, and stays a deep green without any feeding. Our feather moss works well around the base of taller specimens, where you want a looser, more textured finish.

How to use it on bonsai

  • Press cushion moss gently onto damp soil, working outward from the trunk. Don't bury the trunk flare.
  • Mist every 2–3 days rather than watering from above, to avoid dislodging pieces.
  • Keep out of direct sun — the same indirect light your bonsai prefers suits the moss too.
  • No fertiliser or leaf-shine spray on the moss itself; it has no roots to take it up.
