Live Feather Moss for Terrariums • UK Woodland Moss

Our Feather Moss isn't one guaranteed species. It's a seasonal selection of living mosses chosen for their soft, spreading growth habit. Depending on natural availability, it may include or resemble British woodland mosses from genera such as Kindbergia, Brachythecium and Hypnum.

Our mosses are gathered fresh with the seasons, so the textures and shades of green in your bag may vary from the photos.

Choose feather moss for loose, spreading coverage that looks like a miniature woodland floor. Choose cushion moss buns when you want compact, rounded hills and defined focal points.

Tease the moss into pieces of the size you need and lay them onto damp terrarium soil or another moisture-retaining growing medium. Press gently so the underside makes good contact with the surface.

Open the parcel promptly and remove the moss from its packaging. It may look slightly compressed or less vibrant after travelling—this is normal for live moss.

Gently loosen it, place it somewhere cool with bright, indirect light and give it a light mist if it feels dry. If you're not using it straight away, keep it somewhere cool and dark; refrigeration can help keep it fresh for longer.

Keep your moss in a cool, humid position with bright, indirect light. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, radiators and hot windowsills.

Mist when the moss begins to feel dry rather than following a rigid daily schedule. Rainwater or distilled water is ideal, particularly in hard-water areas. Inside a closed terrarium, the moss should need relatively little additional water; if the glass stays heavily fogged, remove the lid for a while to let excess moisture escape.

This is real living moss rather than a manufactured product. Colour, texture and growth vary naturally, and small amounts of brown growth, soil, leaf litter or other woodland material may occasionally be present. The photographs show typical examples rather than the exact moss you will receive.

Is this moss live or preserved?

This is fresh, living moss. It has not been dried, dyed or preserved.

Can feather moss live in a closed terrarium?

Yes. It's well suited to the cool, humid conditions of a closed terrarium, provided it isn't waterlogged or placed in direct sunlight.

Should I mist it every day?

No fixed schedule is necessary. Check the moss and mist when it begins to feel dry. Moss in a closed terrarium usually needs less water than moss in an open display.

Is it one species of moss?

No. "Feather moss" describes a soft, spreading growth habit rather than a single species, so the exact mosses vary with the season.
