STEP INTO THE SHADOWS MOST PEOPLE WALK AWAY FROM

A door still locked, with nothing left around it. A bath run for someone who never came. A mooring rope cut clean through. A stone angel weeping in a forgotten churchyard.

The Darker Side of Moss is our gothic colouring book: forty abandoned places and forgotten things where the moss has quietly moved in. Something happened in each of them. We rarely know what.

WHAT'S INSIDE?

  • 40 original illustrations of abandoned rooms, gardens, churches and shorelines, each slowly being reclaimed by moss
  • Each plate on its own page, with "inquest notes" facing it: what was found, a true note about the moss, and a piece of little-known lore
  • Clear, open line work for coloured pencils, fine-liners and felt-tips
  • A colour test page and tips for colouring darker scenes
  • Square paperback, 21.6 × 21.6 cm (8.5 × 8.5 in), 90 pages

A TASTE OF THE INQUEST NOTES

Plate IV, Under Glass. A naturalist's study, the door forced off one hinge. Beetles pinned in rows, each with a blank label. And one beetle, not pinned, climbing.

Plate XXVII, The Mourner. A stone angel in a forgotten churchyard, headstones leaning, a crow above. Look closely at the soft grey cushions on old gravestones: they're moss, and each leaf ends in a fine silver hair.

GOTHIC, NOT GORY

This is less outright horror and more the strange beauty of things left undisturbed. It's atmospheric and quietly unsettling, made for long evenings, a candle and a box of pencils.

Curious about the real mosses creeping across these pages? Our guide to the different types of moss explains feather, cushion, sphagnum and more.

GIVING IT AS A GIFT?

A curious gift for colourists, gothic souls, lovers of old churchyards and anyone drawn to beautiful, forgotten places.

Prefer the gentler side? Its companion, The Secret Life of Moss, explores the quiet, green places most people walk past. Together they make a lovely pair.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is it scary?

Not in a jump-out-at-you way. There's no gore and nothing gimmicky, just empty places, curious objects and the hint of a story.

What should I colour with?

Coloured pencils, fine-liners and felt-tips all work well with the open line work. If you're using felt-tips, slip a sheet of card behind the page you're colouring.

When will my order ship?

The book ships from Bristol within 1–3 days of ordering. UK delivery is free and usually takes about 2 working days after dispatch. If you order other items at the same time, everything arrives together in one parcel.
