Activated charcoal isn't the most glamorous ingredient in a terrarium. Hidden beneath all that lovely green moss, however, it quietly helps keep the miniature environment fresher.
This 200g bag of granular activated charcoal is suitable for closed terrariums, mossariums and other planted glass ecosystems. A little goes a surprisingly long way.

What activated charcoal does
Activated charcoal has a highly porous surface that helps adsorb impurities and unwanted odours. It is particularly useful inside closed terrariums, where moisture and air circulate within a small enclosed environment. (Here's how that closed-terrarium cycle works.)
It won't correct overwatering or replace proper ventilation, but it makes a useful addition to a thoughtfully constructed terrarium.
How to use it
Add a thin, even layer of activated charcoal above your drainage material and beneath the growing medium.
- Add clay pebbles or your preferred drainage material.
- Sprinkle over a thin layer of activated charcoal.
- Add sphagnum moss or another layer separator if required.
- Add your terrarium soil, moss and suitable plants.

How much do I need?
One 200g bag contains enough activated charcoal for several small terrariums or mossariums. The exact number will depend on the width of each container and the depth of charcoal you use.
For larger projects or multiple builds, choose one of the multipack options.
Frequently asked questions
Does activated charcoal really make a difference in a closed terrarium?
Yes. It helps adsorb impurities and reduce odour in an enclosed, humid environment with no drainage hole, where water and air recirculate rather than escaping.
Do I need it for an open terrarium too?
It's most useful in closed terrariums. Open containers exchange air more freely, so it's optional there, though it doesn't hurt to include it.
How thick should the charcoal layer be?
Just a thin, even covering above your drainage layer — there's no need to build it up thick.
Will it stain the moss or plants?
No. It sits beneath the soil layer and doesn't come into contact with the moss itself.

I was a little disappointed with this transaction. I ordered 'all 3 plus moss' but only received charcoal and moss. I asked about it. The explanation I got was shipping was too expensive. If that is the case, why offer the product at all.
Furthermore I was not even given a choice of a full refund. I was sent half the items and charged anyway. Not cool.

Since having the moss it's turned completely brown, I did message the moss fairy on the 4th of August asking for care tips for the moss and advice on what to do to get the green to come back, she has ignored my message, I understand people can be busy but it's literally been weeks. This business needs to work on their customer service.

I bought the activated charcoal and some ground cover moss. Both came packed neat and safely. The charcoal bag was much larger than I expected which is great! There was a lot more moss than I was expecting also, which is wonderful! I was able to make the terrarium in the picture but also two others.
